Shearing day checklist: the health records worth keeping for your flock

Published by BlockCare · 19 October 2026

Shearing day is one of the few times every sheep is handled and seen closely. A short, consistent record on the day makes later decisions and follow-up much easier.

Keep the notes useful rather than perfect. Record group information once, then add individual detail only where an animal needs attention or a follow-up.

  1. Start with the flock and the dayRecord the date, mob or paddock, number of sheep handled, and who carried out the work. This makes the rest of the history meaningful later.
  2. Note body condition and anything unevenCapture animals that look light, have lost condition, or stand out from the group. Add an individual follow-up if a closer check is needed.
  3. Record skin and fleece observationsNote matters such as skin irritation, dags, fleece condition or anything else you want to monitor. A photo can help with a later comparison.
  4. Check feet and mobilityRecord any hoof or gait concern you observe and set a follow-up task for the animal or group. Seek veterinary advice where appropriate.
  5. Log treatments accuratelyFor any treatment, record the product, date, amount given, animal or group, and any withholding information from the product label or your veterinarian.
  6. Set the next action before the day endsTurn exceptions into reminders: a recheck, a treatment date, a hoof trim, or the next shearing. That is what turns a note into useful care.
Using BlockCare

For routine flock work, one group-care entry can update every selected sheep’s record. Add individual notes only for the animals that need them, then set reminders while the details are still fresh.

Keep the record practical

Your health record is there to help you notice change, remember what happened and have a clearer conversation with your vet, shearer or other care support. BlockCare helps organise records and reminders; it does not replace professional veterinary advice.
